This contemporary take on Euripides’ Greek classic shone a light on the dark shadows of motherhood and mental health. From start to end, you are engulfed by the tragedy that Medea’s character seeps with.
The mirror images performed by the actors displayed a genuine sense of a woman crumbling from the substantial pressures of maternal expectations. The performance did not dwell on the sensitive nature of this taboo topic, it grabbed you by the throat as Medea screamed for her life and the life she took from her child.
It was careful on the deliverance of man and in many respects, it could have shown the other sides to them, but this would have taken away the primary focus of the flickering emotions of Medea. A brutally raw topic that is barely touched upon let alone talked about was brought to the stage emphatically at this perfectly suited venue, Medea was greatly interpreted for the modern audience.
Dancing on the building blocks to an interesting and certainly thought-provoking piece, the university theatre performance impressed and exceeded expectations.
