VOLPONE
23rd May 8pm
This adaption of Volpone offered an audience new perspectives of this classic play, the editing was sharp and offered a strong narrative, getting to the bones of the story, however what was lost a little was the all rounded ness of the whole cast and instead concentrated on main aspects of the play
The cast offered strong performances all round, but the highlights were certainly Volpone and his man servant, giving us an insight into the relationship between the 'servant and his master but this might be also due to the edit itself .
This stripped back version had many qualities, it was simple staged and in this simplicity was effective had the styles were seamless - however some choices within the piece as a whole meant that the performance itself had slight inconsistencies, bringing on the cage was a clumsy moment breaking the momentum of the piece ( almost like it was a scene change - but just wasn't part of the full piece)
Overall a successful piece , although maybe too heavily too signposted in respects of the twist and the end - however it rolled along nicely and had impact with the language effortlessly handled with intelligence.
